“Just a little more, Tinypaw! You almost had that mouse!” Whitepaw said encouragingly. Tinypaw had been trying to master the hunter’s crouch.
“You need to get lower to the ground so you don’t startle them.” Bluefur said, putting a paw on his back.
Tinypaw noticed a small squirrel. Determinedly, he assumed the crouch again. He crept slowly towards it, and just managed to get it.
“Look, I got it!” Tinypaw mewed through the squirrel’s fur. He dropped his catch in front of Bluefur.
“Nice job.”Patchpelt said approvingly. Bluefur smiled again. His first catch… no, I really shouldn’t be thinking this, Bluefur thought. Perhaps this was why parents never mentored their kits. But he wasn’t her kit. Not exactly.
“What else can we hunt?” Tinypaw asked.
“All sorts of things. Rabbits, thrushes, shrews, even frogs!” Whitepaw laughed. Patchpelt stepped closer to Bluefur.
“You’d think they were brothers, if you didn’t know better.” Patchpelt chuckled. Bluefur nodded.
“Alright, calm down. We don’t want to scare off the prey!” Bluefur called. Tinypaw walked back over to Bluefur, and they continued walking, him by her side.
He also managed to catch a mouse, and Whitepaw took down a fat gray rabbit.
Back at camp, things seemed normal. But Bluefur felt a pang of sadness. She would never see Snowfur again. It must be even worse for Whitepaw, she thought to herself.
“What’ll we do next?” Tinypaw asked when they had gotten back. Bluefur yawned loudly.
“Save your energy for tomorrow, Tinypaw! You’ve done enough for today.” She said, lying down. The sun was hot today, and all the clan cats felt sleepy and slow.
“Aw. Well, alright then.” He said, curling up next to her. Bluefur sighed, and slept for a while in the sun. Not as good as the sunningrocks, but still pleasant.
After a while, they got up and continued on with the day. Much to Tinypaw’s disgust, he had to help with the elders.
“But, how come you don’t have to do that?” He said, avoiding the place where the elders stayed. Bluefur laughed.
“All apprentices have to! I did when I was one.” Bluefur said, thinking of when she was an apprentice. She remembered Snowfur again, how they had been together. Bluefur didn’t like the thought, so she put it out of her mind.
“Fine!” He said, stalking off to the elder’s den. Bluefur walked away back towards the center of camp.
Just then, she noticed Sunstar charging towards the camp entrance. She stood up, confused.
“Sunstar, what’s wrong?” Bluefur asked as he came to a halt in front of her.
“Riverclan! They are coming to attack!” He panted. He then went to speak with the warriors. Riverclan attacking? Of all the things that could happen today, Bluefur thought.
Tinypaw sprinted out of the elder’s den, alerted to the sounds. “What’s going on?” He asked.
“Riverclan will attack.”
Thank you all again!
